How We Paint Your House

Siding, brick, trim, doors and shutters — with the real prep that stands up to Tennessee sun and storms.

Step by step

How does Hisway paint the outside of your home?

Every exterior job follows the same 15 steps — they’re written into your proposal. This process is exactly why we can confidently offer a 10-year warranty on our craftsmanship. Before comparing prices, be sure the other company will do these same things.

  1. Protect your yard

First we make room to work without hurting anything: your things moved back, bushes trimmed away from the walls, landscaping protected, and mulch pulled back so we can paint below the line.

    1. Move & Cover Personal Items. Move personal items away from the house. If it is windy and there is a chance of overspray, we will cover personal items with plastic.
    2. Cut Back Bushes & Trees 3 Ft. Cut bushes and trees 3 FT back away from house, if applicable.
    3. Protect Landscaping. Protect your landscaping. Our crews are mindful of landscaping and bushes around the house.
    4. Move Mulch & Stone. Move mulch and stone slightly away from house to paint below landscaping line.
  2. Mask and cover everything else

Lights and downspouts come off, windows and doors go under plastic, and the A/C, outlets, concrete and decking are covered — so the only thing that gets paint is what you asked us to paint.

    1. Remove & Cap House Lights. Remove house lights. Wire nuts will remain on with caps pointed upwards to protect from water. We will tape over the wires and mounting brackets to prevent overspray.
    2. Remove Downspouts. Remove downspouts to completely paint and reinstall.
    3. Mask Windows & Doors. Plastic windows and doors to prevent overspray and leave a crisp straight line when finished.
    4. Cover Everything Else. Completely cover all surfaces not being painted.
    5. Cover AC & Outlets. Cover miscellaneous items like AC unit, electrical outlets, etc.
    6. Protect Concrete & Decking. Use synthetic underlayment over concrete and decking to prevent overspray.

  3. Scrape, prime and caulk

Loose paint is scraped and sanded, bare spots are primed so the paint grips, and cracked seams and frames are caulked. When exterior paint peels early, it almost always traces back to this step being skipped.

    1. Scrape, Sand & Prime. Scrape loose paint, sand, and prime for the best adhesion possible.
    2. Prime Bare Surfaces. Prime all unpainted surfaces for the best possible adhesion. If the surface has already been painted, we will spot prime as needed.
    3. Caulk Seams (Not Hardie Board). Caulk all cracked seams, joints, door and window frames to provide a seamless look when finished. Hardie board seams and joints are not meant to be caulked.
  4. Two full coats, with a wet edge

The roof and gutters are masked, then two full coats go on, worked across each whole side of the house to keep a wet edge — no flashing, no uneven drying.

    1. Mask Roof & Gutters. Tape and mask roof and gutters to prevent overspray.
    2. Apply With a Wet Edge. When applying the topcoat, our crews will work their way horizontally across the entire side of the house to keep a "wet edge" of paint. This will prevent flashing and uneven drying.

What warranty comes with exterior painting?

Every exterior job is backed by a 10-year workmanship warranty, plus lifetime coverage on material defects. Most contractors offer a “tail light warranty” — once you see their tail lights, any issue with the materials or the work is no longer covered. We stand behind our work, every time.

Good questions

Common exterior painting questions

Why does prep matter so much on an exterior job?

When exterior paint peels or fades early, it almost always traces back to what happened before the brush — a dirty surface, loose old paint, or bare wood left unprimed. That’s why we spend real time washing, scraping, caulking and priming. Get the prep right and premium paint holds its color through Tennessee sun and storms for years.

What paint do you use outside?

Unless you pick your own, we default to Sherwin-Williams: SW Loxon XP (Satin) on brick, and SW Duration Exterior (Satin) on siding and trim.

Do you caulk Hardie board seams?

No. We caulk cracked seams, joints, and door and window frames for a seamless look, but Hardie board seams and joints are not meant to be caulked — so we leave them as the manufacturer intends.

Do you help pick colors?

Yes. Every estimate comes with a free color consult, so you can get the shade right before a drop of paint goes on.

Is there a warranty on exterior painting?

Yes — a 10-year workmanship warranty, plus lifetime coverage on material defects. We stand behind our work, every time.
